World of Warcraft
Update 2: I played with a small group last night (well, a friend and I), and that was somewhat more interesting.? I remain dubious as to the value of $100 up front plus $20 per month to play WoW.? Either I’m not in the target audience, or I’ve been spoilt by the versatility of Second Life and the couple of free MMPORGs that I have dabbled in.? Perhaps visiting a WoW city will get me more jazzed?
Update: “Kill ten mottled boars”. What the hell? How impossibly lame *is* this game? PLEASE tell me it gets better. Surely there can’t be 5 million people running around killing boars and collecting amulets?

I’m so far behind the times that it’s not even amusing, but yeah, I’ve taken the plunge and am installing a 10-day trial of World of Warcraft. I’m really unsure about this. I’ve never been much of an RPG fan, beyond the occasional tabletop foray and some aborted attempts to get into Fable and Oblivion. I have however had some minor amusement with Second Life, and the idea of a MMO game does appeal to my sociable side.
We shall see once I’ve got through the hours of downloading and patching. That’s pretty nasty right there. If they can force people to download gigabytes of patches, why not just stream the whole environment, which would also make the environment dynamic.
First WoW question: can anyone suggest a good server for a New Zealand player?

Nooo! Don’t do it! (Standard refrain you will hear from ex-players who had to fight to kick the habit.)
Proudmoore (PvE) has a lot of Australian/NZ players, or it did when I played some time ago.
Exactly, don’t do it. A few of my friends started playing and, uhh well, they’re well and truly stuck in the WoW universe. Thankfully I’ve never tried.
Ha! Thanks guys. I’m hoping my inherent lack of gaming time will stop me from being sucked too far in. Being married with a child tends to take up a lot of my time as is.
Hey. I agree with everyone that previously, it’s QUITE addicting. I played Everquest on/off for 5+ years. MMOs are bad news for folks that are obsessive like me. I finally left Everquest and decided to play WoW casually and I am totally hooked.
I am a level 62 Druid on Draka, a US PVE server, so I’d be no help for you. I run Aximsite.com and Mobilitysite.com and sometimes these sites get neglected late night due to this game. Funny thing is my character’s name is Axim.
Anyhow, if you try it… good luck, it’s truely fun!

Man, you can pick up a copy of WoW for $30nz from EB Games.
It’s been a while since it’s cost $100nz for a retail copy. Heck I think I paid $60nz for mine in some past sale.
Soloing is pretty pointless too. You might as well play Oblivion. MMORPGs are all about gaming with real or ‘cyber’ friends.
