Reformat Error - USB Memory sticks

(2 posts)
  1. Anonymous

I bought a 4GB memory stick a couple of months ago and its was working great until yesterday. When I tried to open it, it told me it needed reformatting but reformatting would wipe all the data. I cannot open it and would really like to be able to access the files. I have been told that it is possible to get around this but the guy who said that can't remeber how. Any hints or ideas?

Sounds like you might have removed the drive without ejecting or stopping it first? Sadly it's an all too common problem.

There are a bunch of different programs that will attempt to recover the data for you. The trouble is filtering the wheat from the spam/chaff. This post has a few good suggestions: http://ask.metafilter.com/31869/How-to-recover-data-from-a-USB-key
