Here's an excellent tutorial on stepping motors. Originally from MakeBlog from memory.
I have a couple of printers/scanners I intend to butcher shortly so hopefully this will come in handy for trying to driver stepper motors via an Arduino.

Hmm yeah. I'm still almost positive that the Lego motors aren't steppers. The fact that they have a "power" setting in software as opposed to a "speed" setting is a hint.
So they're fancy servos then?
Woot. My arduino starter kit arrived today! Hell I only ordered it yesterday afternoon. That's service eh?
Yeah fancy servos that don't have endpoints basically, so they can keep on turning.
And yay Arduino!
I've been playing around with the Servo.h library. Bloody brilliant! Just tell the servo where to position itself from 0-180 degrees.
Go grab some US$4 mini servos and build yourself a robot!
Tempting. $4us each seems pretty dang cheap. 2.7kg is a pretty hefty robot too.
Got my bodged together Deskjet printer 'plotting' this week.
Turns out it's pretty much impossible to control manually, but that's ok. Now I know how to drive the DC motors via the Arduino I can write myself a printer driver and try plotting something via serial back to my PC.
I'm not sure what's going on with cookies and user ids. Grrr.
Stu I'm amazed by your forays into Arduining. I've still got that cheapo tank chassis that I'm yet to do anything useful with.
Thanks man, I'd like to actually plot something readable on that printer, which I believe I can do with just a bit of Arduino coding. Then I'll probably put that project to rest and start building robots with my copy of the cheap Tamiya gearbox :)
i would wait for it "I'd like to actually plot something readable on that printer, which I believe I can do with just a bit of Arduino coding. Then I'll probably put that project to rest and start building robots with my copy of the cheap Tamiya gearbox :) "
