Internet connection for CCNA lab

Hi all,

I'm currently studying for CCNA and am setting up a home lab using Cisco 2600 series routers. I'm wanting to know if anyone out there can help me with setting up internet connection so that I can practice setting up NAT on my Cisco router.

I have aquired a Dynalink RTA1320 modem/router with an ethernet connection to the Cisco router. I want to know how to disable the "router" and NAT part of this modem so that my Cisco router can do all of this instead. Also some pointers on the config required on the Cisco router would be good too.

My ISP is TelstraClear, not sure if this makes any difference or not. Any help appreciated, cheers.

Hi there. What you're looking for is a hack known as half-bridge mode. This will make the 1320 pass all Internet traffic to the 2600.

Thanks for that. Any tips on the router config? I've Googled this but there are so many different answers depending on the country, ISP etc...

Take a look at IFM's cookooks
http://www.ifm.net.nz/cookbooks/adsl.html

Ignore the DSL dialer stuff, but the NAT config should be close to what you want.

Essentially you want an "IP NAT inside" setup.

If the bridge mode doesn't work for you, you can just set up a global port-forward on most modern DSL routers and do it that way.

Yes, I'm in NZ. The config's at http://www.ifm.net.nz/cookbooks/adsl.html or for 800 series routers. Do you think these will be the same for 2600 series routers?

Walks through the configuration on a Cisco router to connect to a DSL modem, might come in handy for anyone else trying the same thing. I haven't tried it yet but hope to give it a go this weekend.

For the simple config you are trying (I assume just using the two ethernet interfaces on the 2600?) then the IOS commands for setting up the ethernet interfaces, NAT, DHCP and static routes will be pretty much the same whether it's an 800 or a 2600.

You could always just jam a DSL WIC in the 2600 if you can find one and do away with the Dynalink altogether.

Yeah, I thought of that but I'm going to need to buy some WIC 1T or 2T's to practice PPP, frame relay etc...I have a fairly limited buget at the moment, may get something like that when I have a little more money.
