Living out in the wilds of West Auckland, our mobile reception is rubbish. I'd love to get this (or something like it) setup so my mobile would work without having to hang out a window on the second floor:AT&T UMTS Femtocell

Yeah I saw that. Bloody brilliant idea, but again possibly limited by NZ broadband.
One of these, fibre to the home, and perhaps a micro gas turbine generator and/or some solar panels and I'd be set.

The only thing I'm not sure about is public access. With NZ broadband restrictions as they are, I don't actually want every Tom, Dick and Harry using their phones on my cell. I'd hope there was a way of adding certain phones to a white list and blocking everyone else?

If you've got full control of it, surely you could block by IMEI or something? Would be mad if you couldn't

I thought it would be years before we saw one here, but I could be wrong:

Vodafone UK's femtocell does operate using only a white list of up to 30 Vodafone mobile phone numbers. You can change them, but initially have to call customer care to do so.
Meanwhile, I read that Alcatel Lucent (who supply Vodafone UK) are also trialling their femtocells in NZ, so maybe they'll be available before too long. More details on the trial at

Thanks David. Great info. Hopefully can get my hands on one, but given the state of broadband in my suburb, I'm a bit dubious.
