As everyone no doubt knows by now, Apple has launched a patent infringement lawsuit against HTC.

Engadget has done a review of the 20 listed patent infringements and it makes interestting reading.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/02/apple-vs-htc-a-patent-breakdown/

A couple of things are fairly obvious; this might be filed against HTC, but the number of OS level patents cited suggest Google and Android are squarely in Apples sights.

Second, the suits are filed in two different jusisdictions, the ITC and the US District Court. The different patents listed in the two filings are also interesting for the glimpse they give into apple's strategy here.

Lastly, it's interesting that multi-touch didn't get a look in. It may be that Apple realised that the prior work of the likes of Geoff Han and Microsoft in this field might make it a difficult barrow to push.

This looks damn useful. Apparently it uses an unfinished feature of Windows 7:

"A year ago, Microsoft talked a lot about this as a big feature in Windows 7," said Alex Gizis, the CEO of Nomadio. "But driver support didn't get finished. The low-level code is in there, but the driver-level stuff isn't. And there's no app or setting in Windows to turn it on."

Explaining that the feature was "half there" in Windows 7, Gizis said his company realized "we have the rest of the software here, in our networking work."
[via]

I'm going to experiment on my Win7 laptop and report back.

Google have release their new Maps app with turn-by-turn to the Android Market, so you can stick it on your HTC Magic:

Auckland City's PCI certification is under serious review which will compromise their ability to carry out any credit card transactions. This will also potentially impact the new Auckland Council. Basically, internal systems at Auckland City have been compromised.

That's rather nuts. What possible reason would Auckland City have for storing credit card numbers from the carpark machines? It's not like you can even have a recurring transaction.

For the last few months, Vodafone have offered iPhone and Smartphone plan users 3GB per month for free. I'm at a loss to understand why. Originally I thought it was because of an impending announcement regarding Apple and Telecom XT. That never eventuated.

Now, Vodafone have announced a brand new 1GB monthly add-on for $50.

Is it just me, or is this underwhelming? $50/1GB plans have been around for quite a while, and $50 on top of the existing smartphone plans makes for a mighty expensive monthly bill.

Discuss?
