I would kill for an affordable EBook reader that could take a PDF and render it into some readable form. In particular I'd be interested in reading pilfered rulebooks in my garage during gaming sessions, which might be problematic since they're just large image scans...

Yeah I read that with some vague interest. Honestly I spend so much time on the web and iPhone that when it comes to long-form reading, I genuinely appreciate the physical book.

Perhaps if I travelled more I'd be keen?

On the NZH this morning.

"Kobo will offer downloads of books, magazines and newspapers, and will sell its own e-reader."

Who gives a crap about e-book sales, I'm interested to see what kind of e-reader they offer? Anybody have any thoughts?

However given this is Whitcoulls/Borders we're dealing with, I will prepare to be underwhelmed in May 2010.

Do you think they're actually selling any?

I've never seen one on prominent display in the window, retail agents like Noel Leeming don't have them (and one told me it was still $1099 three weeks after the price drop). They never seem to show up in the mobile phone chooser on the Vodafone website -- you have to know what you're looking for to find it.

I find it a bit surprising after all the effort that went into the launch.

I'm not suggesting a conspiracy. As you say, it is just sad.

Well the Magic is still a great phone (and free on a Smart 80 plan), but some of these new ones do look pretty stunning.

Cool thanks Rob. It's kinda crazy that there are so many devices and not a squeak from any New Zealand provider. It makes me a bit sad that people are buying the Magic from Vodafone as a "new" phone right now.

Android phone releases are coming so thick and fast lately that I'm starting this topic just for linking to New Zealand release speculation, announcements, and discussions. Feel free to add links below.

Sony Xperia X10

Motorola Droid/Milstone

Google Phone

HTC Legend

Also, given Vodafone NZ's lag with validating models on their network, are we ever going to see them able to keep up with the pace of releases?

If you have a VF/Google Magic, then you won't have Sense unless you can find a hacked mod with it in.

It is likely that it will run sluggishly as the VF Magic is short on RAM.

The imported Magics should run it OK, with an extra 96Mb RAM onboard, they have the same spec as the Hero and it is already out on the 'MyTouch' (US Magic) .

Question: is that a definitive no for Sense on New Zealand Magics, or just "it will work but be slow"?

Do you know if a phone can work on 850mhz and 900mhz thats both vodafone and telecom according to your chart from what I could work out, would that work?
And I read somewhere that XT needs 3G. If its GSM, does that mean it wont have 3G?

I know dual sim phones exist, I'm not sure about what frequencies they use.

You'd be best looking somewhere like DealExtreme and importing one. Beware that the quality of those phones is going to be seriously dubious. But they might work.

You can double-check the frequencies that the phones use against my list here.
