can you please comment on the relative cancellation of noise from the M14 and C18? It looks like the M14’s have more active canceling but the C18’s have more passive and therefore a higher total cancellation in terms of dB’s.

I am less worried about the purity of the sound as I am with removing as much background noise as possible!

Who trusts Telecom? even prior to the X failure, it took over two weeks of serious contemplation prior to moving to telecom. Notice the box box retailers are selling an alternative called Magicbox or magicstar or something like that… This is where Tivo should have gone. to the retailers selling the TVs. I have Tivo, but do not use the CASPA service, to cumbersome, slow, plus costly. I had sky, but chose to give it up for Tivo, as in the end I simply wanted freeview with recording capabilities. Ok it cost a lot, but no ingoing subscription fees to contend with.

TiVo does things most of the other devices in the market don’t — streaming to other devices, for example — but they’re not the things consumers most want. MySky’s functionality is tightly circumscribed, but it’s also very simple. I gather I’m not the only one to have found TiVo’s “award-winning” UI irritating in comparison.

Yeah goddamn lazy pirates. I always laugh when I find myself berating the quality of … er… someones shared home movies … when I’m watching them.

Oh, I get the HD ones for shows that are worth it. I guess the restof the world doesnt have the problems we have with traffic counting to a artificial limit so choose the old codec for compatibility. 180-200 of h.264 seems better, but is rare and is often transcodes for “ipod” etc so look worse than the 350 meg one.

Still no excuse for the poor quality of stuff from caspa on the tivo.

Worse than a lousy 350 meg sub SD divx which is the format of shows I normally get since the scene is stuck in retro-codec land for non HD stuff.

However all other internet services (on-demand content) is exclusive to Telecom Broadband connections.

Personally I thought the service was pretty much doomed as soon as the price point and exclusive Telecom deal was announced. Before that I thought it was borderline given it’s inability to support Sky TV.

There are things that TiVo does that my MySky box doesn’t (most notable being networking) but the price, Telecom tie-in, limited channels and poor on-demand offering rule the TiVo well out of contention.

I seriously wonder at the decision making behind releasing something like TiVo, let alone TVNZ investing millions into it. It’s a fringe device at best, hobbled by ISP exclusivity, and with no point of difference other than the brand name. A back of the envelope calculation should be enough to pin that as a losing proposition from the outset.

Problem fixed shortly thereafter. Turned out to be a corroded junction up a pole on the local loop, that finally packed up in Wednesday’s rain. The VisionStream PoleMonkey said he was surprised we had any ADSL at all; couldn’t work out how we managed to get a circuit through it. The issue for Orcon isn’t the fault (stuff breaks and shit happens); it is the contortions I had to go to to be “heard”, and get some feeling the fault was being investigated.

Things took a turn for the meta there last year when a shark tragically jumped itself!

Moved phone to Orcon unbundled service last week and nothing but problems since.
1) ADSL router drops connection at random and reconnects after a few seconds. Sometimes hours apart, one cluster two days ago where it dropped the connection every couple of minutes. Behaving itself today but line speeds well down on what we were getting before we went unbundled.
2) Phone line fine at first, increasing static over a couple of days now all dead. No dial tone. No nothing. Have been trying to get Orcon to look at it for several days now but support@orcon.net.nz seems to be an empty hole. Now had no phone for 40 hours and they just aren’t taking me seriously. XT has never been out for thls long, and at least you only have to wait a cfouple of hours for 1-2-3. Moving the phone line was a BAD move.

Take a walk down the boulevard from Ceasers to the Luxor, passing Bellagio, Alibaba, Paris, MGM Grand Excaliber etc....

Anyone who thinks otherwise obviously doesn’t know or understand WinCE and Remember WinCE is not Windows Mobile.

Expression Blend / Sketch with Silverlight for UI development, XNA for 3D / games or dedicated apps.

Quite a number of previous “full screen” apps like TomTom, Xkrakt, etc run perfectly fine.

Given there are ~50K WinMo apps… it is a ballsy move but I also agree with Ben, its the correct move.

Again, all rumours and whispers, but I’m led to believe that it’s a complete re-boot of the platform. I won’t be surprised if the UI dev is based around WPF and/or Silverlight.

In the same way that the iPhone has UIKit for “basic” apps, and OpenGLES for 3D apps, I’m wondering if WP7 will have WPF + some 3D framework.

I’m sure there’s some historical kernel stuff in there, but they’re definitely dropping support for all legacy WinMo apps. Ballsy call, but it’s the right one in my opinion.

I haven’t developed Win Mob for several years, but it was always a pretty awful exercise – particularly when it came to the UI. Are app developers going to be able to salvage everything the currently have and just re-skin their app UI for Win Mob 7? Or has the core functionality changed underneath? Is it still based on a sort of retarded half cousin to the Win32 API?

As everyone no doubt knows by now, Apple has launched a patent infringement lawsuit against HTC.

Engadget has done a review of the 20 listed patent infringements and it makes interestting reading.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/02/apple-vs-htc-a-patent-breakdown/

A couple of things are fairly obvious; this might be filed against HTC, but the number of OS level patents cited suggest Google and Android are squarely in Apples sights.

Second, the suits are filed in two different jusisdictions, the ITC and the US District Court. The different patents listed in the two filings are also interesting for the glimpse they give into apple's strategy here.

Lastly, it's interesting that multi-touch didn't get a look in. It may be that Apple realised that the prior work of the likes of Geoff Han and Microsoft in this field might make it a difficult barrow to push.
