Beating the Wind: Parkzone F27 Stryker

September 15th, 2007
current plane is not too bad, it’s faster and more stable than the last one, but it still struggles to make headway when the all too common low pressure system comes rumbling up from the southern ocean and starts the wind sock whipping about.

stryker I could go bigger, but bigger means much more money. A bigger plane basically entails a complete new set of radio gear: bigger servos, bigger motor, bigger bills. The alternative: stay at the same scale but go faster!

!–adsense–>The Parkzone F27 Stryker is a fairly tame flying wing shaped parkflyer in its standard form, but who ever sticks with standard? Besides, buying a RTF plane is silly when I have half the gear (servos, receiver and motor) sitting around doing nothing.

By happy coincidence, RC Bandit sell bare Stryker kits, just waiting for someone to install a high-power brushless motor and get silly. I haven’t gone quite as silly as some other guys have (as witnessed by this video), but I did pick up a grunty 55 Amp speed controller so that I can go for a bigger motor at a later date if the speed is not sufficient.

As you can see from the photo, it’s almost complete after one night of building. Easy stuff. I forgot to get bullet connectors for the motor, so I’ll pick those up ASAP and then all I have to do is fit the canopy, and maybe give it a dab of fluro paint so I can recognize which way is up!

No longer will the waving trees outside bring my mood down!

strykerpaintedUpdate: All painted. Maiden flight in very still air this morning, followed by a wind-buster against a decent sea breeze this afternoon. Flying the Stryker in the wind reminds me a lot of slope soaring. Lots of ‘bumps’ and wing tilts, but she has plenty of grunt to push through it all.

Podcasts make me grumpy

August 16th, 2007

Podcasts make me grumpy, and it has nothing to do with their quality or content.? It’s just podcasts in general.? I’ve been pretty stressed lately.? Not entirely sure why, because work is damn fun.? It might just be that there is too much on in my life.

When I have a break, perhaps during a walk or during my commute, I listen (well, listened now) to podcasts.? Problem is, I’d be having a break from work, trying to clear my head, and these podcasts would be filling my head with more information.? More ideas, more news, more concepts, more trivia… STOP.

I’ve gone back to listening to music.? A bit of classical, some dance, perhaps some Damien Rice or John Legend.? And I’m finding I have a clearer head and less stress.? And I have more ideas.? Strange eh?? ? Put in? fewer ideas, but get more out.

Empty your cup grasshopper.

Music to me is meditative.? Podcasts have become (always were?) mind-noise.? Sorry Leo, Kevin, Dan,? and others.

First Helicopter Damage Report

05082007.jpgLuckily nothing too major. Just a pair of smashed blades. The result of a fraction of a second contact with a chair leg while practising hovering indoors. Well, actually just practising spooling up and down inside, but it skittered across the floor and contacted with the chair.

Live and learn. New blades installed, waiting for calm weather outdoors.

Genesis loses focus…

This is brilliant. With my Genesis power bill I got not one, but two brochures telling me about how my power company is focusing on climate change. Two identical brochures printed on high-quality, bleached, heavy stock. I guess they’re not too focused on reducing wastage or energy spent on printing and processing.

Here’s an idea Genesis: how about offering me an online-only bill option so I can stop receiving unnecessary pieces of paper!?

ESky Honey Bee King 2

July 20th, 2007

20072007Look what the tooth fairy delivered today:

I’ve haven’t even written a proper review for the last one yet, but I’ve unfortunately been entirely bitten by the bug. This new helicopter is much more advanced than the Lama, with a belt-driven tail rotor, and full CCPM head control.

Truthfully I’ve battled with the Lama and its co-axial setup. It seems that no matter how hard I try, one motor is slightly more powerful than the other, so it’s always slowly rotating one way or t’other. I put it down to the cheap design, fixed pitch, and cheap electronics. In comparison, the Honeybee King 2 is about as technically complete as you can go in electric helicopters. You can go bigger and more expensive, but as far as the CCPM head and belt-driven tail, these things remain the same right up to the monster 4 stroke nitro helicopters.

Wish me luck. Hopefully the next post won’t be a picture of a helicopter in a thousand pieces.
