LG Optimus 2X Dual Core Smartphone Coming To 2Degrees

By | May 14, 2011

We live in interesting times. 2Degrees has launched the LG Optimus 2X: the first (well, officially at least) dual-core handset available in New Zealand. It’s hard to imagine a time when single-core CPUs were the norm in desktop computers, and I can only guess multi-core will be the future standard on handsets.

The LG Optimus 2X comes with the Tegra 2 dual-core 1GHz processor, 8GB of memory (expandable via SD cards), and an 8 megapixel camera (that will record 1080p video). Stock operating system is Android 2.2, but 2Degrees are promising an upgrade to 2.3 “by the end of October”. I’ll be really interested to see if this device is as smooth as the Nexus phones I’ve seen running 2.3. I have a suspicion that Google has unlocked some GPU power for the standard UI, but I’m yet to find reference or proof of that.

I haven’t had any hands-on time with this device, but watch this space for a review.

Press release follows:

2degrees and LG launch world’s first ‘Dual-Core’ Smartphone in New Zealand

2degrees Mobile today launched its fastest and most powerful smartphone yet – the much anticipated LG Optimus 2X. Featuring powerful ‘Dual-Core’ technology, the new top-of-the-line device powered by Android™ is the first of its kind to be made available to New Zealanders.

Chief Marketing Officer Larrie Moore says, Dual-Core technology enables customers to enjoy twice the power of a regular handset because it’s specifically designed to process high definition photos and video as well as multi-tasking.

“Exclusive to 2degrees, the LG Optimus 2X is now the fastest smartphone you will find on the New Zealand market. And, at $999 (RRP), it’s easily the best value.”

With its 1GHz Dual-Core processor, the LG Optimus 2X with Google is upgradeable to Android 2.3 by the end of October – representing the next evolution in Android technology.

“This device reinforces 2degrees’ commitment to offering New Zealanders uncompromised performance within its handset range – selected especially for those customers who seek the highest spec experience,” Mr Moore said.

Noted for its bright, clear TFT LCD screen technology, the LG Optimus 2X offers outstanding HD video capture and easily manages heavy gaming graphics on an impressive 4in display.

Key features of the LG Optimus 2X include:
– Tegra 2 Dual-Core 1GHz processor and ULP GeForce GPU
– Android 2.2, upgradable to 2.3 Gingerbread
– 8GB on board memory, with MicroSD (up to 32GB)
– HSDPA 7.2Mbps and HSUPA 5.7Mbps
– An 8 megapixel camera with 1080p full HD video recording and HDMI-Outport
– Slick, sturdy, compact handset, in a black finish

The LG Optimus 2X will be available through all 2degrees retail stores today and through selected outlets around New Zealand in the coming weeks. It can also be purchased online at www.2degreesmobile.co.nz.[/quote]

    Yeah, looks cool.

Vodafone are supposedly launching the Samsung Galaxy SII in a week or two. More dual core goodness.

” I have a suspicion that Google has unlocked some GPU power for the standard UI, but I’m yet to find reference or proof of that.”

Yep, improved performance in the graphics department iis a feature of 2.3.

In 2.3.4 there is a new Open Accessory library that is apparently an arduino based ADK.

    Let the robots roll!

2Degrees doesn’t have many phones but they do know how to pick them.

Although this one doesn’t even even compare to the Galaxy S 2 in terms of performance, it’s a heck of a lot cheaper so represents pretty good value for money.

    Well done 2Degrees!

    Yes, it’s good to see.

Even VFNZ are getting into the mid range market with the Galaxy Ace at $580
