Thrust SSC Team Aims for 1600kph

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

The team that broke the sound barrier with a car (although we use the term car very loosely), for the first time is not resting on their laurels. They are in the planning stages of an effort to break 1000 miles per hour (1600km/h). Wing Commander Andy Greene had this to say about the experience of the previous 1228 km/h runs in Thrust SSC:

“It’s not a case of saying ‘blimey, this is fast’ – if anything it’s another sensation. It’s like the slow-speed feeling you get just before a car crash -only it lasts for about two minutes.”

Spine chilling video of the SSC runs below. Look for the shockwave building and collapsing around the nose of the vehicle from 1:00 to 1:05.
