What to Say?

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

I’ve been debating this post internally in my head for days, before finally deciding that I have to share it.  I’ve been telling my friends and family the news stoically, on the grounds that a) they need to know what is going on and b) we don’t want any nasty surprises.

My reasons for posting our news are somewhat different, and you might understand after reading on.

The simple facts are these:

  • My wife is carrying a very badly deformed baby that will die in the near future, well before full term.
  • We have opted to terminate the pregnancy for her physical safety and our mental well being.

During the last couple of weeks, I have been absolutely amazed at the wealth of information online, from medical descriptions of tests and conditions, through to heartwarming stories of health and recovery, and beyond.  I don’t know how we would have handled these times without the foreknowledge of what is happening to us, and I’m positive (because one told me directly) that the doctors appreciate being able to work with informed patients.

The other thing I am thankful for is that we don’t have to put up with the abortion ‘debate’ bullshit going on in some countries.  Regardless of your position on the topic, imagine having the choice between a looming medical emergency with unknown consequences, and a safe, scheduled procedure.

I am pro that choice.

The above comment was surposed to have a message to you and your wife, but thanks to my overuse of emoticons and some kind of html trickery, it was lost.
