Palm Treo 700w

Palm Treo 700Engadget, ever the front-runners, have got their hot little hands on a Palm Treo 700w. The 700w is the long-expected Windows Mobile version of the popular Treo 650.

The 700 appears to be a hardware revision as well as the new OS – the device is slightly slimmer than the 650, and button positions are changed. The “w”suffix also hints at a possible Palm-powered version of the 700.

I’m going to have a hard time staying away from this one. I’ve wavered around the 650 for a long time, but the Palm OS holds some bad memories for me. The 700 mixes the latest and greatest Windows Mobile 5 with arguably the best qwerty-phone hardware out there.

Doesn’t a horizontal screen orientation seem ummm a little pointless on a keyboarded device?

PalmOne don’t even bother supporting this for the Treo650 so I wonder why it’s available on the 700w.

Oh and that ’240×240′ comment is bullshit. The Treo650 is 320×320 in it’s PalmOS incarnation so there’s no reason the Windows Mobile version won’t be at least that as well.

    Hi,
I wouldnt be overly concerned about the Treo 700 fighting the Palm OS. Trust me, you will be back to Palm OS very soon as Windows CE simply requires more taps for a given operation that Palm OS does….

Stu, landscape mode is supported in software on WinMo5, but I do reckon that landscape shot was a bit tongue-in-cheek.

Tam, have you used WinMo5? I think you’ll be surprised. Still, the one thing that does annoy me about Windows Mobile is the slowdowns and lockups. Something that I got extremely infrequently on Palm. But in my mind it’s a small price to pay for true multitasking, effortless connectivity, and the familiar PocketPC interface.
