Polishing apples

I just grabbed an apple from the free fruit bowl (perks!), and started polishing it on my shirt. Am I the only one who picked up this habit as a child? I hadn’t really considered it, but now I remember having contests at primary school to see who could get their apple the shiniest prior to consuming it.
Is it some sort of in-built defence mechanism to attempt to clean all the pesticides off the apple? Or does an apple just taste better when it’s polished?

It’s because apples you buy from the store are coated in wax. That’s *why* you can shine them. I guess buffing them probably gets rid of a bit of the wax as well. Wax is pretty harmless stuff to consume mind you…just ask anybody that wears lipstick on a daily basis.
