Fitness

June 10th, 2004

It would appear that not only is a Warrant of Fitness a certificate of safety for your vehicle, it is also a guarantee that the vehicle is roadworthy.

I’m trying to sell a near-classic MR2 at the moment, and a prospective buyer paid to have the car inspected by a professional pre-purchase inspection company. The inspector was very surprised to find rust in the main front chassis crossmember, and also severe play in the steering system; both apparently un-warrantable problems. So he was also very surprised that the car received its latest WoF less than a month ago. He mumbled about incompetence and the Consumer Guarantees Act.

To my initial fear, the inspector took it upon himself to find the WoF issuing authority, and gave them a piece of his mind. I was worried that we’d have a visit from some law enforcement authority and have the WoF revoked. So it was to my even greater surprise that we instead had a visit from the guys that issued the WoF, who proceeded to grovel copiously and offered to repair both issues because “the last thing anyone needs is a visit from the LTSA“!

Not entirely sure how kosher the whole thing is, but hey, I’m not really complaining. I just hope the guy that requested the inspection is not too put out by the whole thing!!

    Score!

Nice car… and very clever of you to take a picture of it next to a dumpster, for sharp and instructive contrast: “This is not rubbish. That, on the other hand, is.”

Low threes is what it sold for in the end. A bit of a bargain, but I wasn’t positive it’d get its next WoF.
