Mobile Hacking

http://www.ben.geek.nz/blog/images/Set5_02-thumb.jpgWith my recent foray into palms and cellphones and stuff, you’d think that I was talking about modding my mobile phone. But no! Mobile has a whole new meaning when there’s a baby in the house.

Ollie’s Lamaze musical mobile is a very cool toy. It plays three different tunes, and the mobile slowly rotates. Or at least it is meant to rotate. It started to intermittently stop rotating, and then gave up the ghost altogether. Time for a hacking session…

The prime candidates for the breakdown were the two joins in the pole that holds up the mobile. Each of these joins has a wee mono audio plug, which are meant to transfer the power up to the motor in the spinny bit. As the extenstion pole thingy was plugged and unplugged, I think they got looser and eventually lost connection.

So rather than repairing the connectors, which were very fiddly to get to, I decided to do a single bypass operation:

A metre or so of stereo wiring, and one 3.5mm mono plug/socket combination. Pretty cool. We can still remove the mobile from the base by unplugging the wire. This is necessary because Ollie gets very amused by the moving mobile, to the expense of his sleep and sanity.

    Wicked hack!

Speaking of which, Busytot was rudely woken from his nap this afternoon by the baby monitor tuning into the neighbour’s phone. “What dat radio, Mummy?” “Hmmm…well, it’s someone being incredibly picky about the details of a Caribbean holiday, and…” It took me some time to figure out what was going on, so now I know pretty much everything there is to know about Bermuda in the off-season.

Dodgy, though. Whose baby monitor is picking up *our* phone calls???
